Steven Pritchard

As a father of five, including a daughter who has cerebral palsy (CP), I have a deep, firsthand understanding of the emotional and practical needs of families facing complex mobility challenges for their loved ones. This personal experience drives my dedication to delivering effective, economical postural management solutions, championing sustainable alternatives to traditional bespoke seating that bring significant environmental benefits.

With a foundation in mechanical engineering, my career spans nearly two decades in complex rehabilitation. I was fortunate to be trained and mentored by Gordon McQuilton MBE, a pioneer in moulded seating, whose work since the 1970s has advanced seating solutions for those with fixed postural deformities. Over the past 18 years, I have developed postural assessments and engineered seating solutions tailored to individual needs—designing both custom moulded and modular seating systems that balance postural support with independence.

For years, conventional solutions in the UK have included moulded seat inserts (MSI), foam-carved, and foam-cast seating. While these options offer significant postural support, they are bespoke, single-use products that lack the flexibility to adapt to a client’s changing needs, such as growth or shifts in weight. The environmental toll of these traditional products, which often end up in landfills after minimal use, has highlighted the need for more sustainable, reusable solutions in our industry.

Initially, I was skeptical of Spex seating’s ability to match the postural control provided by conventional moulded solutions. However, as I encountered more service users benefiting from Spex, I began to see its potential.

I was drawn to Spex’s modular seating concept, which offers a high level of adjustability and reusability, making it a practical and sustainable alternative to bespoke moulded seating.

Spex engineering precision, innovative design, and commitment to real-world results in postural control resonated with me, particularly as I consider myself a clinical assessor rather than a salesperson.

Spex’s approach to postural support stands out in the market: its products are akin to “Lego or Meccano,” allowing components to be adjusted, interchanged, and reused as needs evolve. This flexibility enables same-day configuration and delivery, an advantage that led me to reach out and join their expanding UK team.

Since joining Spex, I’ve been welcomed into a team with immense passion and expertise, where my contributions are valued.

I am committed to offering honest, needs-based recommendations and am confident that Spex provides a viable, adaptable alternative for bespoke postural management—an option I’m proud to bring to service users in the UK.
